5S Procedure – AVR NSI

Experiences with 5S in the recycling industry

We started at AVR with an improvement project from our other company CI-Company. This showed that a lot of time is lost in searching for material. Nothing has a permanent place and many materials get lost or damaged. We also do not work according to a common standard, but from our own interpretation of what is good. The need for clarity and a common standard quickly became clear and a 5S process is a very good basis for this. In any case, AVR also wanted to gain experience with 5S in the recycling industry, so that we can also apply this in other departments.

AVR plastic post-separation INSTALLATION - Recycling

AVR separates no less than 430 million kilograms of residual waste per year with the NSI (post-separation installation), with 2 sorting lines that run day and night. This is equivalent to the residual waste of approximately 2 million people. The installation is equipped with the latest and most modern technical gadgets: flat screens, wind shifters, ballistic separators, a shredder and near-infrared scanners. About ten to fifteen percent of the waste that passes over the belt consists of plastics and beverage cartons and is intercepted using all these techniques. This plastic consists of different types: foils, 2D and 3D mixed plastic. The remaining residual waste continues via a belt to our waste and energy plant, where the rest is given a useful place in society in the form of energy and raw materials. We have also completed a process at AVR Logistics in Rozenburg. See here

THE 5S ROLL-OUT

We started working on our 2 days 5S Implementation together with a group of operators. Because it is a polluted environment, there was a week between the two days in which a lot of cleaning could be done. Here too, there is an alternation between theory and implementation in practice, so that all 5 S's are covered. The operators came up with good ideas, several of which were immediately implemented. Because the process was carried out with the active operators themselves, there was immediate support and enthusiasm. The participants then pass the information on to their teammates, who later 5S training will have to be able to fully connect with the 5S assurance.
